What is Beclovent (or Beclomethasone inhalation)?

Beclovent (or Beclomethasone inhalation) is a steroid. It prevents the release of substances in the body that can causeinflammation which may trigger an asthma attack. Beclovent is used to help prevent asthma attacks but it will not treat an attack that has already begun.

Important Information

Below are a number of key points you should consider before taking Beclovent. As with all prescription drugs, consult a medical professional prior to starting to take Beclovent.

Do not use Beclovent to treat an asthma attack that has already begun as it will not work fast enough to reverse your symptoms. Instead, you should use another, faster-acting inhalation medication to treat an asthma attack that has already begun.

You should contact your doctor if your asthma symptoms do not improve after using Beclovent for 2 weeks. Additionally, you should seek medical attention if you think any of your asthma medications are not working as well as usual. An increased need for asthma-related medication could be an early sign of a serious asthma attack.

Your dosage needs may also change if you have surgery, are ill, are under stress, or have recently had an asthma attack.

If you were switched from an oral steroid to Beclovent (which is an inhalant), you may need to go back to taking the oral medicine if you are under stress or have an asthma attack or other medical emergency.

It is highly recommended that you carry an identification card or wear a medical alert ID to let others know that you may need an oral steroid in an emergency.

What should I know before taking Beclovent?

Below are guidelines you should follow when taking Beclovent:

You should tell your doctor prior to taking Beclovent if you have been sick or had any sort of infection (especially tuberculosis). You may not be able to start using Beclovent until you are well.

Beclovent should not be given to children under the age of 5.

The primary ingredient of Beclovent is Beclomethasone  which is a steroid. Long-term use of steroids may lead to bone loss (osteoporosis), especially when combined with smoking, lack of exercise, not enough vitamin D or calcium in the diet, or a family history of osteoporosis.

The active ingredient in Beclovent is beclomethasone.

Possible side effects of beclomethasone inhalation

Serious side effects from beclomethasone inhalation are not likely to occur. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop using beclomethasone inhalation and seek emergency medical attention or notify your doctor immediately:

  • an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives);
  • numbness, tingling, or pain;
  • a rash or unexplained open sores or bruising; or
  • worsening respiratory symptoms.

Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to use beclomethasone inhalation and talk to your doctor if you experience

  • dry mouth, nose, or throat after use;
  • yeast (or other) infections in the mouth or throat (white patches);
  • hoarseness or deepening of the voice, cough, or sore throat;
  • wheezing;
  • increased pressure in the eyes, glaucoma, or tearing of the eyes;
  • headache or lightheadedness;
  • unpleasant (or loss of) taste or smell;
  • decreased growth in children taking large doses; or cataracts, which may develop after long-term use.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Will Beclovent cure my asthma?

No. Beclovent and other beclomethasone inhalers are not intended as cures for asthma. Asthma is a chronic condition that needs to be treated adequately to prevent suddent onset attacks.

Will Beclovent stop an asthma attack in progress?

No. Beclovent and other beclomethasone inhalers are very slow-working and are intended to be taken on a regular basis to prevent asthma attacks.

How does Beclovent work?

Beclovent works by reducing the inflammation in the lungs thereby reducing conditions that can lead to difficulty breathing.

Are there any drugs I can’t take in combination with Beclovent?

If you use a bronchodilator, it is recommended that you use it prior to taking a dose of Beclovent in order to enable the drug to better penetrate the lungs.

Can Beclovent cause an allergic reaction? If so, what are the signs?

Get emergency medical help immediately if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

What happens if I miss a dose of Beclovent?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up any missed doses.
